#2 in this crazy world of choices, we’ve only got a few

The first time I heard this line, it struck me. If you don’t know what song this is from, I don’t know what to tell you, what were you doing for New Year’s Eve? Was there music playing? If 2012 taught me anything, it’s that we do only get a few choices in each game we play and the rest is left to chance. We choose if we want to be prepared for the opportunities that are coming, but we never know when they will hit. In theory, we get to choose the people that we take chances on, but we don’t get to decide when the investment will reveal itself as a good one (or not). We get to decide what feelings we stick to, but the “what happens after” has a way of slipping right out of our hands. Every now and then, we even get to choose the challenges that we get to take on, but usually, it kind of just bumps into us when we’re looking for something else. Of all the dots a year brings, few stains are by choice, but they somehow come together to make something, don’t they?

If you worked hard to make something happen in 2012, you’ll know that the obstacles that slide into play are unexpected. You’ll know that with a voracious desire to get something started, being willful is important and 60% of the time, you won’t be sure if what you are doing is actually working. Trust yourself. If you want something, be headstrong with the wanting of it, but learn to be open to how the world wants to give it to you. Most of the things that I wanted came to me, but if I had stressed over the details (and I did, at first), I would have missed the whole journey. The journey is about the tweaks in the plan and the magic of the wiggling. Each time an unforeseen difficulty appears, evaluate if you want to be on the road you’re on and if you do, find another way. Sometimes, it’s the new paths that we take us to where we needed to be and it’s the wiggling that makes us people that we were meant to become.

So, make some choices this year. Even if it’s just the constant reminder that you want to be better. You’ll find that sometimes to just want something is enough. And if your heart and mind are in the right place, there’ll be a way.

Stay tuned for #3…
